Plan would double Athol hydro
Crescent Street Dam could meet 30% of Starrett's power load

ATHOL -- About $38,000 will be coming to the town from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative for a feasibility study for upgrade of the hydroelectric power generator at the Crescent Street Dam.
This plant feeds power to Starrett Company. The grant will explore ways to double the output of the plant, perhaps meeting the needs of 30 percent of Starrett's power load.
The grant was announced by State Rep. Christopher Donelan and State Sen. Steven Brewer.
"Using the Millers River to meet the power needs of a major manufacturer is good for the environment and is a small step in reducing our reliance on foreign energy sources. This is a great investment," Donelan said.
"In today's global economy, innovation is a key component for the continued success of individual companies," said Brewer.
"I applaud Doug Starrett and his staff for recognizing the importance of utilizing a renewable energy source to reduce energy costs and I am thrilled that the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative has awarded this funding to the Starrett Company."

Plans are also underway to make use of the former Rodney Hunt Company water generating station at Lake Rohunta. As of November 2007, developer Peter Gerry plans to utilize the station to generate power for a new housing development along the shore of the lake.

...When questioned about the dam alongside Route 202, Gerry explained that the waterwheel is 80 percent completed and will probably be able to begin generating electricity soon. Originally Gerry was only offered four cents per kilowatt for the dam, however, the new push for renewable green energies has changed that original offer to something more reasonable. A new roof was recently installed on the power house but a new floor is still needed.
